When organisations talk about ageing assets, the conversation usually starts with how old the equipment is. But chronological age is a poor proxy for the condition, capability and risk profile of a physical asset.
What is asset maturity?
Asset maturity describes where an asset sits in its operational lifecycle — from commissioning through steady-state operation to late-life and decommissioning. Two assets of the same age can be at very different maturity levels depending on how they have been operated, maintained and modified.
Why it matters
Understanding asset maturity allows organisations to:
- Anticipate failure modes that emerge at specific lifecycle stages
- Prioritise investment where it delivers the most value
- Balance maintenance spend against remaining asset life
- Plan for transition, modification or decommissioning at the right time
Asset maturity is not about how old something is. It is about how well you understand where it is in its life.
At Asset One, we help organisations assess asset maturity as part of a structured approach to asset management — ensuring that decisions about maintenance, investment and risk are grounded in operational reality, not assumptions.
